FAQ

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT DURING MY SURF LESSON?

Upon arrival, you’ll meet your instructor(s) and get set up for onshore instructions. This typically takes 10-15 minutes depending on how quickly students catch on. From there, we’ll get in the water and start surfing. Although most lessons are taught in shallow areas, there will be times when swimming is necessary. This activity is not recommended for anyone who can’t swim or is questioning their abilities.

WHAT SHOULD I BRING TO MY SURF LESSON?

A few items you should bring are: Sunblock, water, towels, and swimwear that you’re comfortable moving around in. Wetsuits are not provided in the summer months unless specifically requested. Please keep in mind we have limited sizes.

WHEN WILL I KNOW THE TIME OF MY LESSON(S)?

Lesson times are dictated by swell, tides, wind, location and ages involved. Due to the changing nature of these factors, lesson times might not be announced until the week of. If you are unable to wait until our announcement please contact us via phone or email.

HOW LONG ARE THE LESSONS?

All lessons are an hour and a half from your start time. If you’re late to a lesson, we don’t extend to make up for the missed minutes so please arrive on time or a few minutes early.

WHERE ARE LESSONS TAUGHT?

Lessons are taught between Rodanthe and Corolla. We offer lessons at specific town beach accesses or can come to your home for private group lessons (see restrictions below). We DO NOT offer lessons in Rodanthe, Southern Shores, Duck, or Corolla on Saturdays or Sundays. You can inquire about lessons for the 4×4 beach in Corolla, but we don’t typically teach in that area due to high traffic volume.

WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS FOR LESSONS TO BE TAUGHT AT OUR RENTAL HOME?

Your rental house must be oceanfront or semi-oceanfront in order for us to teach there. This option is unavailable in Rodanthe, Southern Shores, Duck, and Corolla on Saturdays and Sundays. If you have questions about whether or not your location qualifies, please reach out to us prior to reserving.

WHAT HAPPENS IF THE WEATHER’S BAD?

The weather on the Outer Banks can change at a moment’s notice. We keep a close eye on the radar and daily forecasts to ensure lessons are completed in a safe manner. Lessons are done in the rain, but wind and thunderstorms could cause delays or cancellations. Lessons are not offered when the red flags are up or in conditions that we deem to be dangerous.

WHAT IS YOUR CANCELLATION POLICY?

We have a strict 48-hour cancellation policy. A full refund will be given in the event you cancel outside of 48 hours. Cancellations made by your party within 48 hours will receive no refund. We can make exceptions for unexpected emergencies or illnesses. If we cancel due to weather or wave conditions, you may reschedule or be refunded 100% of the money.

IS IT CUSTOMARY TO TIP OUR INSTRUCTORS?

If at the end of your lesson you feel you’ve had an exceptional experience it is customary to offer a gratuity to your instructor(s).
